Espagne, Mon Amour

With nephew Armando Mauleón, Lavapiés, Madrid, October, 2018

Yes, I've long had a love affair with Spain. No photos from 1959 and Santiago de Compostela except for the commemorative booklet and a certificate, but I do have one from as early as 1974! I'll simply post photos and comment on each. Is there a place, perhaps somewhere that you never actually been, that fascinates you and draws you in? For me, it is Spain. My mother had a similar fascination with Greece, and I’m now learning that at least two of her cousins have the same fascination. One of them now makes a living from her knowledge of ancient Greek culture.

Dancing sardana in Barcelona, 1974. The sardana (sardane in Catalan) was prohibited by Franco's fascist regime but people still did it. Piled their coats in the center and formed a proud and stately circle, defying the restrictions of the dictatorship. Oh, I'm the one with the pony tail. The man to the right was coaching me. San Francisco, Aug. 1975, protesting the execution of Basque nationalists Otaegi and Garmendia, accompanied by little Victoria, the middle of my “red diaper babies”. This execution represented the last use of capital punishment in Spain, as the murderer-in-chief died two months later.
